When Oakland was first making its name in soccer in the middle seventies, the man the National Soccer Coaches Association thought was the top Pioneer was Andy Richters. The outstanding defender was OU’s first ever All-Region selection in 1974, anchoring a defense that allowed just six goals all season long.

The durable Richters played all but 15 minutes of his four-year career at Oakland and was co-captain in each of his last three seasons, including the 1976 team that was OU’s first to qualify for the NCAA tournament. That season saw Richter’s best offensive output of six goals and three assists. OU was 39-12-5 in Richter’s four years of play.

Richter was an OU assistant coach in 1978 while finishing his bachelor of science degree in management. Following his graduation he became assistant soccer coach, director of the human resource lab, and physical education instructor at Chapman College in California, where he earned a master’s of science in sports medicine. He coached one of the top high school soccer teams in southern California for two successful seasons (41-4-8), and has also managed a sports medicine clinic as well as a health club fitness center.

He is currently single and lives in Fountian Valley, CA, where he is Western regional Sales and Marketing Manager for Unisen, Inc., an exercise equipment manufacturer, and runs a fitness consulting company.
