Rod Mitchell was a 21-time All-American at Oakland University, earning no fewer than five of a maximum of six honors all four years and all six during his junior year. Versatility was Rod’s biggest asset; he swam freestyle, butterfly, individual medley and all relay events.

Rod was part of the 400 and 800 freestyle and 400 medley All-American squads all four years at Oakland, and earned individual All-American honors three times in the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley, twice in the 100 butterfly and once in the 400 medley. At one time or another at Oakland, Rod held records in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, the 100 freestyle and with all three relay squads.

In 1976 and 1977 Rod was co-captain of the swimming team.
