Oakland University’s first men’s basketball standout was Carvin Melson. He played for the Pioneers from 1969-73 and set virtually every school record in just 99 games. During his career, Melson scored 2, 409 points and averaged 24.3 points per game. He scored 969 field goals and 471 free throws, had a shooting percentage of .538, and set a record of 1,204 rebounds during his career.

Melson’s accomplishments also include record performances for most points in one game (48), most field goals in a game (21) as well as 12 other individual records. He was co-captain of the basketball team in 1971-72 and 1972-73. Melson was selected to All-Tournament teams eight times. He was selected to the NCAA District 4 All Star team and the NBA Coaches Bulletin All-American Team in 1973. Melson played professional basketball with the Dayton Hawks of the International Basketball Association upon gradation.
