Oakland University placed in the top three nationally three times from 1984-87, and one of the main reasons was Steve Larson. As one of the nation’s top backstrokers, Steve was a 19-time All-American in his four years at Oakland, earning his honors in backstroke, sprint freestyle and relays. He was a six-time All-American as a junior in 1986. In his senior year, he won an individual national championship, capturing the title in his specialty, the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a part of school-record-holding teams in the 400 medley and 400 and 800 freestyle relays, and was a two-year team captain. While Steve swam for the Pioneers, Oakland placed second nationally in 1984 and 1987 and was third in 1986. He received a Student Life Scholarship and was a member of the Student Life Scholarship renewal committee. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Oakland. Steve is a manufacturing engineer at the Ford Motor Company Romeo Engine Plant. He and his wife, Kristen, live in Rochester Hills.
