Dewayne Jones is the coach responsible for bringing Oakland University women’s basketball program to a national level. Dewayne took a winning program to the ranks of a champion.

Oakland was 70-18 in three seasons under Dewayne, winning the program’s first two GLIAC championship and making a pair of NCAA appearances. Oakland made its first trip to the NCAA II Final Four in 1982, the initial season the NCAA sponsored championships for women. Oakland fell one point short of another regional title the following year. The Pioneers won back-to-back GLIAC titles in 1982 and 1983 posting identical 16-0 records both years. In Dewayne’s three years OU was 44-2 in GLIAC plays.

For his team’s successes Dewayne was twice honored as GLIAC Coach of the Year. He was also selected as the Michigan Collegiate Coach of the Year for women’s basketball by the Michigan Basketball Advisory Council.
