| Dewayne Jones is the coach
responsible for bringing Oakland University womens basketball program to a national
level. Dewayne took a winning program to the ranks of a champion. Oakland was 70-18 in three seasons under Dewayne, winning the
programs first two GLIAC championship and making a pair of NCAA appearances. Oakland
made its first trip to the NCAA II Final Four in 1982, the initial season the NCAA
sponsored championships for women. Oakland fell one point short of another regional title
the following year. The Pioneers won back-to-back GLIAC titles in 1982 and 1983 posting
identical 16-0 records both years. In Dewaynes three years OU was 44-2 in GLIAC
plays.
For his teams successes Dewayne was twice honored as
GLIAC Coach of the Year. He was also selected as the Michigan Collegiate Coach of the Year
for womens basketball by the Michigan Basketball Advisory Council. |
