Oakland University’s basketball program was in the mid-1980's. When you came to an Oakland basketball game, there was always one thing you could count on seeing: a left-handed scoring machine named Chris Howze. Chris led Oakland in scoring during his junior and senior seasons when he earned All-GLIAC honors. He started all but three games over his entire four-year career and averaged at least 14 points per game all four seasons. Chris is in Oakland’s career top 10 in 10 different categories, including total points, where he is third with 1,814. On defense, Chris held school career records in steals and blocked shots until those records were broken in the last few years. Mostly, Chris was known for his offense. The two-time team co-captain had two great nights early in his senior year that cemented his spot in the Hall of Honor. On December 19, 1985, Chris broke Carvin Melson’s school record by scoring 52 points in a game at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Eleven days later, Chris hit 13 consecutive field goal attempts on the way to a 38-point night against Aquinas College. Both are still records. Off the court, he won the Sidney Fink Memorial Award in 1986 for demonstrating an ongoing commitment to improving race relations. Chris earned a Bachelor of Science degree in public administration from Oakland. He is a pharmaceutical sales representative in Columbia, Maryland.
