Mark Doyle dominated the NCAA Division II in the backstroke events during his four years of participation at Oakland University. Mark was a 15-time All-American, including both backstroke events all four years. He won seven of eight possible backstroke national championships while at Oakland.

Mark’s reign began in 1978 when he won both backstroke national crowns as a freshman. After winning the 100 but faltering in the 200 as a sophomore, he returned to form as a junior, winning both and helping Oakland to its celebrated national team championship. He completed his 100 backstroke sweep as a senior and added his third 200 title that same year. His other All-American honors came in the 200 and 400 individuals medley and the medley relay. His time of 1:51.92 in the 200 backstroke is still a school record, and national championship record as well.

Also as an outstanding student at Oakland University, Mark won a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, A GLIAC Student-Athlete Award and the Alfred G. Wilson, among others. He earned academic honors every semester at Oakland, and in 1981 was voted the school’s top senior chemistry student.
