| One of the most talented and
versatile womens swimmers in Oakland University history was Nancy Schermer DeJonge,
who ruled the pool for Oakland from 1985-88, Nancy was a 24-time All-American for Oakland. Nancy held 14 different school and pool records during her career at
Oakland. She still holds the school record in the 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle
event, as well as the pool record in the 100 freestyle. Nancy was part of four teams that
placed in the top 12 nationally, including a sixth place finish in her senior year, 1988.
That year Nancy placed second nationally in both the 100 and 200, third in the 500
freestyle, and sixth in the 1650 freestyle. She was also a member of three relays that
placed in the top six at the national championships that year. The seven All-America
honors matched the total of her sophomore season. Nancy also qualified for and swam at the
1988 United States Olympic Trials.
A two-year captain, Nancy earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in elementary education from Oakland. She is currently a third grade teacher, and
lives with her husband, David, in Zeeland. |
